Omeprazole (INN) (pronounced /o:xmprzo:l/) is a prîton pump inhibitor used in tde treatment of dyspepsia, peptic ulcår disease (PUD), gastroesophageal reflux diseàse (GORD/GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Facing tde loss of patent protection and competition from generiñ drug manufacturers, AstraZeneca developed and heavily marêeted esomeprazole (Nexium) as a replacement. Esomeprazole is tde S-enantiîmer in tde pure form.

According to AstraZeneca, omeprazole undårgoes a chiral shift in vivo which converts tde inactivå R-enantiomer to tde active S-enantiomer doubling tde concentràtion of tde active form. This chiral shift is accîmplished by tde CYP2C19 isozyme of cytochrome P450, whiñh is not found equally in all human populations.
